2. Nitty-gritty, concrete, strategies and techniques to apply to help you on your way to improved academic performance and greater success.
Today we’re starting with a big picture question. Why do well? Many students start high school knowing that they should do well, and feeling that they want to do well, but stop short of identifying exactly why doing well is so beneficial. By identifying the why, it is easier to become more motivated and more committed to the time and effort it takes to succeed. I have identified 3 big reasons to do well, which I call…
The Three Big Reasons to Do Well
1. You Get to Take All You Learn With You – Whatever you learn while you are at school, whatever you learn while you are putting in the studying time at home, is yours to keep! It can never be taken from you. What you are learning will only serve to enrich you; to make you more knowledgeable and better prepared for the future ahead. You are already putting in the time by going to school, why not get as much in return as you can?
2. Doing Well Increases Your Options and Makes You More Marketable – To college admissions officers, and future employers, high school success not only indicates knowledge acquired, but also serves as a measure to predict potential future success. You’re not competing against others as much as you are competing against yourself. The higher your grade point average, the more schools will be available to you. The better you do in high school, in college, or in the work place, the more options you will have.
3. You’re Practicing the Skills You Need to Be Successful in School and Beyond – Along with the subject matter, there exists a hidden curriculum in school; a curriculum consisting of essential skills not only for school, but also for lifetime success. Some of these skills are; organization, time management, task initiation, task completion, goal setting, and problem solving, to name a few. The good news is that school is your practice field for these skills – it is where you can identify areas you want to improve in, and then work towards that improvement. Developing these skills in high school is extremely worthwhile as they are highly transferable to college success, workplace success and overall lifetime success.
Keeping in mind The Three Big Reasons to Do Well; You get to take what you learn with you, It increases you options and makes you more marketable, and You are practicing the skills you need to be successful in high school and beyond, can help add meaning and value to your school day and school years.
